Abstract
This study was conducted to establish the eradication plan by using rabies bait vaccines in the Republic of Korea.
For the safety and efficacy of the oral rabies vaccine(Oral SAG-1;Virbac, Raboral V-RG;Merial), five kinds of animals(raccoon dogs, badgers, cats, dogs and mice) were tested. Neutralization peroxidase linked assay(NPLA) was used in detecting neutralization antibodies against rabies virus. Wild and domestic animals which were orally administered one and two or ten doses had no adverse events due to vaccine and specific pathological lesions, respectively. Viral Neutralization antibodies(VNA) in raccoon dogs were first detected 2 weeks post-ingestion(oral administration). VNA could be detected 4 weeks post-ingestion(oral administration) in all raccoon dogs.
We tried the field trial of oral rabies vaccine(Raboral V-RG;Merial) on five cities in Kyonggi and Kangwon Provinces, i.e., Paju city, Dhongducheon city, Youncheon-gun, Cholwon-gun, Hwacheon-gun, among rabies infected regions. Seventy-five percentage of the vaccine were ingested in case of Cholwon-gun region 30 days after applying bait vaccine. Average antibody forming rate in raccoon dogs captured in the applied five cities was 32%(10/31) during April to November 2001. Neutralizing antibodies against rabies virus could not be detected in raccoon dogs and cats captured in other regions during the same period. Also, Rabies cases in the applied area were decreased or were not reported during 4¡5 months after applying rabies bait vaccine.
